25th May 2025 marked the 43rd anniversary of the sinking of The Atlantic Conveyor during the South Atlantic conflict in 1982. Twelve lives were lost in the sinking, including the ship’s Captain, the first British Merchant Navy loss in conflict since World War II.
The Lord-Lieutenant, High Sheriff Mr. Billy Hui, Lord Mayor Cllr Barbara Murray, Representative of the Falkland Islands Government Mr. Richard Hislop, Captain of RMS Queen Mary 2 Capt. Aseem Hashmi, Mrs. Pamela Brown MBE DL and Managing Director of Grimaldi Liverpool Agency Ltd Mr. John Perry attended a service of re-dedication, led by Rev. Bill Addy of Liverpool Parish Church with a Bible Reading read by the Hon Capt. The Earl of Derby DL RNR.
Lord Derby unveiled the updated stonework on the Cunard War Memorial which contains the addition of “1982” to ensure the loss of The Atlantic Conveyor and its crew will never be forgotten.
