Visit of HRH The Duke of Gloucester to Liverpool

HRH The Duke of Gloucester visited Liverpool on Thursday 25th September, attending at The Western Approaches, (The Top Secret Underground War Bunker from the Second World War and key to winning the Battle of the Atlantic), the Liverpool Empire as part of their 100th Anniversary celebrations and Liverpool Cathedral for a service to mark the presentation of 156 Regiment’s Maquette of the Liverpool Heroes Memorial to the Cathedral, to sit alongside the Chavasse Sword.

Captain Noel Chavasse was the only man to win the Victoria Cross twice in the First World War and one of only three men (two of them RAMC officers) to be awarded a bar to a VC. The memorial is located in Abercromby Square in Liverpool.

Below are some pictures of The Duke with some of the many people he met during the lead up to the very moving service at the Cathedral including dependents of the Chavasse family and one guest who’s grandfather was a stretcher bearer with Captain Chavasse. Many thanks to Major Roy Bevan for the photographs.
