Paul Smith BEM was presented with his British Empire Medal today, 13th November 2025, in Southport.
Paul was working as a Senior Paramedic Team Leader for the North West Ambulance Service on duty on 29th July 2024 when the tragic incidents of last year occurred. Paul was the first paramedic on scene and, in line with NWAS Incident Response plans, he gained situational awareness so that subsequent resources were directed most effectively.
Paul declared a major incident and set about attempting to triage the patients for treatment until additional resources arrived.
Paul’s early arrival on scene likely had a major influence on the survival of the seriously injured.
His Majesty has awarded Paul Smith the British Empire Medal for services to the Community in Merseyside.
