Mark Blundell Roscoe Lecture 2.12.25

Roscoe Lecture

William Roscoe is known as the “father of Liverpool culture” and is best known for his work as an early abolitionist, supporting the Act of Parliament in 1807 to abolish the Slave Trade. He passionately believed that education shaped attitudes and created opportunity. Over two hundred years ago, William Roscoe himself initiated the first public debates in Liverpool.

LJMU launched the Roscoe Lecture series in 1997 to give the people of Merseyside the chance to debate topics of public interest. It consistently attracts hundreds of local people as well as many who travel from further afield to be part of the audience.

Against this background, the Lord-Lieutenant, Mr. Mark Blundell CVO, was invited by Professor Mark Power – Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of LJMU – to give a Roscoe Lecture last night and of course my topic had to be, “Working for the Royals”.

We hope those who attended found it interesting. Mr. Blundell has certainly found it an interesting eight years working for the Royals, representing His Majesty The King and upholding the dignity of the Crown.
